The Woodford Equity Income fund and Lloyds Banking Group have been amongst the top sellers on the AJ Bell Youinvest platform in the run up to the end of the tax year, suggesting income generation remains a key focus for many investors.

Below is the full list of the most popular investments made via the AJ Bell Youinvest platform this ISA season:

  Shares Funds Investment Trusts
1 Lloyds Banking Group Woodford Equity Income Scottish Mortgage
2 Barclays Fundsmith Equity Tritax Big Box
3 BP Vanguard Lifestrategy 100% Equity Finsbury Growth & Income
4 Glencore Vanguard Lifestrategy 80% Equity Woodford Patient Capital
5 HSBC Blackrock Gold and General City of London

“The tax free status of ISAs makes them a no brainer for investors and they are now easier than ever to apply for.  It can take less than 10 minutes to set one up via an online platform giving access to a wide range of investments", says Mark Dunne, AJ Bell Head of Research.

“Lloyds is the most popular individual share after recommending a 266.6% rise in shareholder returns in February. Despite the shadow of payment protection insurance (PPI) mis-selling claims still hanging over the bank, investors seem convinced it is set to be a progressive dividend payer in the coming years.

“For those not comfortable selecting individual stocks to invest in, there are actively managed funds such as Woodford Equity Income or Finsbury Growth & Income that give exposure to predominantly UK income focused stocks or Fundsmith Equity and Scottish Mortgage that aim to generate growth from global equities.

“Alternatively there are tracker funds such as the Vanguard Lifestrategy range that provide a globally diversified portfolio with different weightings towards equities and bonds depending on how much risk you want to take.  The charges on these funds are also very competitive at 0.24%.”
