The UK construction purchasing managers' index fell unexpectedly to 45.0 in August, from 45.3 in July, according to IHM Markit.
The reading was below market expectations for a rise to 46.7, and had now come in below the 50.0 no-change threshold for the fourth consecutive month.
'Lower volumes of construction output were attributed to worsening order books and a lack of new projects to replace completed contracts,' IHS Markit said.
