Santander UK profit falls 35% amid intense competition for mortgage customers

Spanish bank Santander's UK operation reported a 35% fall in first-half profit after its income was hit by intense competition in the mortgage market.

Pre-tax profit for the six months through June fell to £589m, down from £905m on-year.

Net interest income slid 8% and the company also upped provisions for liabilities and charges by £173m to £206m.
