UK mortgage approvals unexpectedly fall in December - BoE data

UK mortgage approvals declined in December, data published by the Bank of England showed Friday.

Mortgage approvals fell to 61,013 in December from 64,072 in November, worse than an expected increase to 64,800.

The ’effective’ interest rate, the actual interested paid on newly drawn mortgages, decreased by 5 basis points to 4.15% in December from 4.20% in November.

It was the lowest effective interest rate since January 2023.
