Consumer price inflation in Ireland picks up to 6.3% in August

Consumer price inflation in Ireland picked up pace in August, the latest figures from Ireland’s Central Statistics Office showed on Thursday.

The consumer price index rose by 6.3% annually in August, accelerating from a 5.8% rise in July. The CSO noted this was the 23rd straight month in which the annual price increase was at least 5.0%.

Anthony Dawson, statistician in the Prices Division of the CSO, said the most significant rises in the year were seen in Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels, where prices rose 17.3% in August, and in Recreation & Culture, where they rose by 12.9%.

On a monthly basis, CPI rose by 0.7% in August, accelerating from a 0.2% rise in July.

On a EU harmonised basis, consumer prices rose by 4.9% annually, picking up from a 4.6% increase in July. Month-on-month, CPI rose by 0.5% in August, accelerating from a 0.2% rise the month before
