UK retail sales performed better than expected in October, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics on Friday.

On an annual basis, retail sales fell 6.1% in October, compared to a 6.8% fall in September.

The figure was better than the market had expected, with consensus of a 6.5% decline cited by FXStreet.

On a monthly basis, sales grew by 0.6% in October, compared to a 1.5% decline in September. According to FXStreet-cited consensus, sales were expected to remain flat.

Sales excluding fuel fell 6.7% on an annual basis, as expected, compared to a 6.1% decline in September. On a monthly basis, they rose 0.3%, compared to a 1.5% fall the month before.
