The headline index confounded forecasts and slipped back in early trading. Blue-chips had been tipped to start on the front foot following a positive session in the US on Friday, early gains in Asia today and a rise in global oil prices.

“Investors are toasting drinks group Fever-Tree (LSE:FEVR) following a strong second half performance,” says AJ Bell Investment Director Russ Mould.

“The group, which supplies premium carbonated mixers, expects full year revenues to be 84% up on 2014 which is comfortably ahead of forecasts as it continues to widen and deepen its growth across its product range.

Breedon Aggregates (LSE:BREE) has followed up the recent record-breaking £55m road contract with joint venture partner Whitemountain with a £10m deal for work on a five-mile stretch of the A9 between Kincraig and Dalraddy south of Aviemore. This is the first stage in a £3bn project to transform 80 miles of single carriageway to dual carriageway between Inverness and Perth by 2025.

“Shipping group Goldenport’s (LSE:GPRT) share sank after the group suspended debt payments due to the ‘particularly challenging’ economics of the dry bulk market. The group is now in talks with lenders to restructure its loans.
