The blue-chip index started the week on the front foot following Friday's positive US jobs data which makes a Federal Reserve rate rise seem virtually inevitable.
“Online gaming group 888 (LSE:888) made early gains after a bullish update,” says AJ Bell Investment Director Russ Mould.
“The group’s full-year adjusted earnings are on course to be at the top end of current forecasts following continued trading momentum in the second half of the year driven by strong performances in Casino and Sport.
“Vodafone (LSE:VOD) also made early gains after it extended its mobile money transfer service, M-Pesa, to Ghana following a successful pilot in August. Around 15 million people - approximately 64% of Ghana’s population - do not have bank accounts.
“Oil stocks continued to decline after the fall in crude in prices last week when the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries decided to maintain current output. BP (LSE:BP) and Royal Dutch Shell (LSE:RDSB) were both down in early trading.
